Dead & Buried | 1981 | USA | Gary Sherman
Directed by Gary Sherman who gave us Death Line and Poltergeist III, Dead & Buried was a rather new take on the quite popular trope of the living dead. Sheriff Dan Gillis is disturbed by the sudden murder spree in his small town of Potter’s Bluff, seemingly perpetrated against strangers in the town. What’s even more disturbing is that Gillis’ wife and indeed the entire town may be in on the killings… and then the dead victims begin reappearing, seemingly now alive and unharmed. Compared to a lot of the video nasties, Sherman’s postmodern horror film is much higher in terms of technical productions and budget, so it’s apparently the graphic gore effects that got this noticed, like a needle being jammed into an eyeball and a face being dissolved in acid.
