Deep Red | 1975 | Italy | Dario Argento
Often cited as Dario Argento’s best giallo work, Deep Red is a deeply flamboyant and stylish murder-mystery affair that is considered by many to be the most definitive of the genre. Psychic Helga detects that one of her audience members is a twisted murderer, only for the said killer to target her later that night. Musician Marcus witnesses the murder and becomes embroiled in a lengthy investigation as he teams up with reporter Gianna to deduce the identity of the black-gloved assassin. As the killer begins to target those around him, Marcus eventually discovers an abandoned house shrouded in local rumours that may hold the key to the killer’s mania. Featuring some iconic sequences, like a woman being scalded to death, a man’s teeth being bashed out with a mantelpiece and the creepiest doll outside of a ghost film, the drastically shortened Fletcher VHS of Deep Red was likely lumped in due to Inferno and Tenebrae’s presence in the DPP’s crosshairs.
