Enter the Devil | 1972 | USA | Frank Q. Dobbs
Very obscure and compelling, this entry from Frank Q. Dobbs follows a diabolical cult of devil-worshipping Penitentes operating in the sparse wastelands of arid Texas. After a string of mysterious disappearances in the Texan outback, sheriff Jase is put on the case to investigate the area and a nearby mining community of Mexican workers. Local man Glenn joins forces with him, as well as an anthropological author named Leslie, who suspects that the age-old traditions of the Penitente cult have been revived in a modern form. All three are about to find out the hard way about the shocking truth of the ‘Disciples of Death’. Much more of a slow burn than its dynamic marketing would suggest, this little-seen thriller is exceptionally well-acted for such a low budget production, but there’s seemingly no real reason why this was included on the nasties list other than the satanic themes.
