There’s not much to say about the film that kickstarted the slasher craze of the 80s and gave birth to one of the most enduring horror icons of all time, the hockey mask-wearing Jason Voorhees. In the original, Camp Crystal Lake is being reopened after a spate of killings and accidents have soured the place’s reputation. A small group of energetic counsellors help to fix up the place ready for the summer season and also engage in some frivolous sex and drugs. Their fun is interrupted however by the arrival of a stalker who systematically kills the teens one-by-one until only the artistic Alice is left to fend for herself, where the horror is revealed to be from a most unlikely source. The inaugural entry of probably the most successful horror franchise of all time is complemented by tons of atmosphere, a gorgeous summer camp setting and of course, brutal kills provided by Tom Savini. The sheer infamy of the film made it utterly ripe for the DPP to pluck.
