GBH | 1983 | UK | David Kent-Watson
One of the rarest films to ever grace the video nasties lists, this British fisticuffs action film was shot-on-video in locales around Manchester. Starring the incredibly interesting cult figure Cliff Twemlow as the Bond-like “hard man” protagonist, GBH follows Steve ‘The Mancunian’ Donovan as he is released from a stretch in prison, hoping to live a cleaner life. His reputation and a recent spate of violence perpetrated by the disreputable Keller mean that the talents of Donovan are called upon once more, to safeguard the nightclub scene, rescue his friends… and of course, charm the local ladies into bed. Inspired by the success of other British crime dramas like The Long Good Friday and Get Carter, David Kent-Watson’s film is much lower in budget yet doesn’t skimp on the enthusiasm and ambition of the project, featuring a gleefully cliché-ridden script and hilariously cheesy music. One can only assume it was the bloody climax and cover artwork that got this one marked for prosecution.
