Inseminoid | 1980 | UK | Norman J. Warren
Often summarised as a blatant rip-off of Ridley Scott’s Alien despite being in production at the same time, this British effort from cult director Norman J. Warren is a similar science fiction narrative exploring an extraterrestrial birth inflicted this time on a female victim rather than a male. An expedition to a harsh planet to study its long-dead civilisation begins to turn sour when the group are attacked by one of the last remaining aliens, who rapes a member of the team Sandy and impregnates her. As the group await rescue, Sandy becomes increasingly unhinged and gains superior strength and the ability to withstand the planet’s atmosphere, allowing her to systematically slaughter and consume her former allies with ease, until the eventual birth of her offspring. Wreathed in atmosphere from the filming in Chislehurst Caves, Inseminoid’s recurring gore effects as well as the moment where a pregnant Sandy is stomped in the stomach probably contributed to its inclusion on Section 3.
