Island of Death | 1976 | Spain | Narciso Ibáñez Serrador
A Spanish pot-boiler that features a chilling premise involving murderous children, all wrapped within a gloriously tropical and sun-drenched nightmare atmosphere. Alternatively known as Who Can Kill a Child? or Island of the Damned, the movie gives us Tom and Evelyn, a British couple who are holidaying before Evelyn gives birth to their baby. After docking, the pair find the island eerily deserted except for stony-faced local children who seem to regard the outsiders with suspicion. After scraping some conversation with the few remaining adults, it’s clear that something has gone horribly awry on the island, as the kids have killed all the grown-ups and plan to slay Tom and Evelyn next. Including some distressing scenes like Tom laying into the children with an MP40 or Evelyn’s unborn child attacking her from the inside, the film had the additional misfortune of sharing a title with the Niko Mastorakis film, as well as a similar premise of a British couple encountering horror on a remote island, causing the police to confiscate the film along with the other nasties.
