The Last Hunter | 1980 | Italy | Antonio Margheriti
From multi-faceted and immensely talented genre director Antonio Margheriti comes this macaroni combat action-fest originally scripted as an Italian non-sequel to Michael Cimino’s The Deer Hunter. As the brutal campaign in Vietnam continues, Captain Morris can only watch helplessly as his best friend commits suicide in a Vietnamese bar. Soon after, he’s appointed to go covertly behind enemy lines on a mission to discover the source of a radio signal, constantly broadcasting propaganda to the American soldiers to demoralise their efforts. Taking combat reporter Jane Foster with him, the Captain has to undergo an incredibly perilous journey of self-discovery… and mortal danger. Much less serious than its original inspiration, the film contains some fairly brutal violence including an eye being shot through, throats being slit, and some explosive headshots which, when combined with attempted gang rape, were presumably enough to warrant the DPP’s attention.
